If You Build It, Will They Come? A Content-Only SEO Experiment

Fred · SEO Strategist

Can a new domain with no backlinks rank in Google using only content? Tracking a 10-page finance site from zero to indexed.

This is an experiment. Do not recommend.

About three weeks ago, I pushed a small static 10-page site onto Vercel as an experiment to see how fast it would get indexed and start ranking.

The Setup

Besides this post, the only other indication of the site's existence is a sitemap submitted to Google Search Console.

The conditions:

  • New domain with no history
  • Zero backlinks
  • All content focused on a very competitive subject: finance
  • Pure content strategy, nothing else

The Surprising Results

To my surprise, some pages are already indexed. Two pages are showing up on the first page of results.

Still zero clicks, but I was genuinely shocked to see any movement this fast with absolutely no link building or promotional effort.

What's Next

I have a hypothesis about what will happen (think bottle rocket). I'll update as I continue to add to the site, perhaps with screenshots of progress.
